What is it about?
This chapter explores the growing importance of avatars in the metaverse. The authors argue that avatars will become increasingly central to our digital identities, much like physical addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and social media accounts have been in the past. Focusing on Ready Player Me (RPM) as a case study, the chapter examines the concept of cross-platform avatars and their potential to enable interoperability in the metaverse. RPM allows users to create personalized avatars from selfies and use them across various games and applications. This cross-platform compatibility is facilitated by the glTF/GLB format, an open standard for transmitting and loading 3D models. The chapter also touches upon the future of avatars, predicting they will become increasingly integrated into our digital lives, representing us across a range of devices and experiences, and potentially even gaining legal recognition.

Why is it important?
This chapter highlights the need for interoperable avatars in the evolving metaverse. As more platforms and experiences emerge, the ability to maintain a consistent digital identity and easily transition between them will be crucial. Ready Player Me, through its cross-platform functionality and adoption of open standards, offers a compelling example of how this interoperability can be achieved.
