What is it about?
The term 'indigenous psychology' refers to a field of research that considers psychological theories and the research and treatment practices based on them in terms of their cultural dependency and associated limited scope. The mainstream academic psychology that has dominated the world since the 19th century and stems particularly from Europe and the USA, is also examined in terms of its cultural and ideological characteristics, i.e. its indigenous characteristics, and differentiated from other indigenous psychologies. This article outlines how the indigenous-psychological perspective raises awareness of aspects of the history, politics and theory of science, a refexion of which should be fundamental to any form of culturally-informed psychology, but is still largely neglected in cultural psychology.
