Why is it important?
Many experts think that regional integration in different parts of the world is currently in crisis. However, in order to adequately assess the success and failure of regional organizations like ASEAN and the EU, we need to better understand their origins and how they change over time. The book shows that regional organizations cannot simply adapt optimally to any new policy challenge because political decision-makers have different ideas about the common regional purposes they should fulfill, and about the roles and responsibilities of states and their organizations in international order.
