What is it about?

Nypa palm was introduced into the Niger Delta a century ago, but became invasive 30 years ago and currently had out-competed the native mangrove species in many locations. This had led to the loss of some ecosystems services rendered by mangroves.

Why is it important?

This study for the first time has documented the cause of Nypa palm invasion in Niger Delta, Nigeria. It also proffered some solutions on how to tackle the problem of invasion.

Perspectives

This paper is important because Nypa palm invasion had taken over 40% of mangrove forest and if nothing is done in the next century mangroves may disappear in this region.
