What is it about?
Dr. Ann Luce from the Faculty of Media & Communication together with Profssors Vanora Hundley and Edwin van Teijlingen from the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health just published the edited collection Midwifery, Childbirth and the Media. The book is published by Palgrave Macmillan in its Pivot series and has nine chapters and a conclusion. In it fair to say that in the new millennium midwifery and maternity care has been and often still is a regular hot topic in various parts of the media and in various parts of the globe. The various chapters of this volume cover a wide range of topics and themes: from ‘televised childbirth’ to ‘birth stories in British newspapers’ to ‘social media and midwifery’. Moreover, it covers from ‘the media’s portrayal of infant feeding’ to ‘the promotion of fear in childbirth by the media’ to ‘midwives engagement with the media’. The chapter authors from a multitude of disciplines bring a multidisciplinary approach to this edited book. The editors themselves represent three different scholarly disciplines from Media Studies & Journalism (Luce) to Midwifery (Hundley) and Sociology (van Teijlingen). The editors hope that this book will contribute to a better understanding for the general public of midwifery and also of childbirth, but also for midwives and other health professionals a better understanding of the media. Such knowledge will ultimately lead to better outcomes for childbearing women, their babies and their families.
