What is it about?
This a review of the work done on the topography of mid-ocean ridges, particularly using sonars. These kinds of data have revealed how the seabed is continually being created by volcanic eruptions and modified by faults, sediment deposits and landslides.

Why is it important?
In contrast with work on the shape of Earth's surface on land ("geomorphology"), where shapes of features have been visible on maps and directly for a long time, our work underwater has developed in stages as new technology has been developed and used by scientists. This makes submarine geomorphology fundamentally different from subaerial (land) geomorphology and more like planetary geomorphology.
