Why is it important?
This study is very crucial as it largely contributes to both practical and theoretical knowledge in democratic policing. The police are the obvious state security apparatus that relates more often to citizens than any other security apparatus. All over the world, the police have come under severe criticism for officer's unprofessional conduct which threatens public trust and confidence in such an important security. In a democratic society like Ghana,, it is only imperative for the police to behave within democratic principles and ethos and this requires the needed reforms for effective policing. This study therefore addresses such issues by looking at both internal and external reforms implemented by the Ghana Police Service and their associated challenges. It also offers practical recommendations for effective policing in Ghana's Fourth Republic towards democratic maturity.
