What is it about?

There are many paradoxes and internal contradictions in the Russian far right's treatments of gender, sexuality, and gendered social roles. This article examines those paradoxes, ultimately illustrating that such treatments of gender and sexuality are a form of political and social control that fits into a larger landscape of growing state power.

Why is it important?

The aim of this chapter is to develop a theoretical framework through which it is clear that the efforts of the Russian far right are primarily meant to strengthen their political power by dividing and therefore weakening multiple populations, both literally and figuratively.

Perspectives

Examining the Russian far right's treatment of gender and sexuality reveals broader tactics of political and social control, lessons from which are applicable beyond Russia and provide salient commentary on tactics of the global far right.
