What is it about?

Developing and evaluating good interfaces involves understanding how the user feels when interacting with the system. It is possible to evaluate this interaction, in real-time, through the analysis of the users' facial expressions. This work carried out a systematic literature review to investigate how facial expressions have been used in the assessment of user experience (UX).

Why is it important?

Emotion is an essential factor in user experience and of particular importance for system acceptance. Emotion recognition based on facial expressions is one of the tools that can aid in assessing user emotions, with the added advantage that it can be performed during the interaction with the system.

Perspectives

We were able to conclude that: "the area of UX evaluation through emotion recognition is growing but still lacks in standardization and modernization of tools, procedures, and evaluation criteria, suggesting opportunities for relevant research in the area. It is expected that the present work will serve as a starting point to discuss these methods and strategies for interaction designers, developers and evaluators and for the development of new methods or assessment tools in the area."
