What is it about?

In this publication, we developed and tested the CyclAir system. A system mounted to any bike give real-time feedback about the level of CO2. We used an easy to understand feedback scheme, using red, yellow and green indicators, making it possible to identify current CO2 concentration at a glance. We have shown that live information about low air quality areas can increase cyclists reflection on biking behaviour and route choice.

Why is it important?

Frequent bike commuting through areas with low air quality decreases the potential gain from choosing bicycles for transportation. Alternative, preferable routes are often available with only a minimal increase in commute time and/or distance. The CyclAir system attempts to increase awareness about one's route choice, ultimately leading to informed reflections.

Perspectives

The idea behind this article was to use real-time information on a metric well known (CO2) to increase awareness about the immediate impact of motorised traffic and thereby increase self-reflection on route choices concerning daily commute.
