What is it about?
Tight junctions are formed by strands that surrounds the whole cell perimeter, seal the extracelular space and confer to the epithelia the capacity to form a selective barrier. Often, these strands anastomose. Here we review the relationship between strands structure and the function of tight junctions: the more complex the structure of the strands, the lower the paracelular permeability.

Why is it important?
Besides a review general aspects of the tight junctions, we present a model that relates the degree of tight junctions’ filaments interlacing with tight junctions’ permeability.
