What is it about?

It furhter elaborates the concept of Social Acceptance of renewables' innovation (Wustenhagen et al. Energy Policy 2007) for wind energy. Four common sense ideas about this are debunked, and then the muli-level character of social acceptance is explained and theoretically underpinned.

Why is it important?

Socal acceptance of renewables is the main factor in the analysis of the potential of renewables to supply out energy, particularly electrictiy, in a sustainble way. That is primarily by implementing new social-technical systems based on non-carbon sources. Social acceptance is problematic, mainly because of low energy densities of renewables, leading to huge spatial requirements for all distributed generation infrastructures, and moreover, because current power supply is largely based on principles that contradict the distributed generatrion character of renewables. The current system is locked-in because of institutional frames, which leads to strong resistance in society.

Perspectives

As leading author in social acceptance research, and currently the lngest active researcher in this domain, I was invited bu two leading researchers on wind power development to write this contribution to the sustainabile technology encyclopedia.
