What is it about?
How is it that we understand so well what is going on in our conspecifics' brains, what others feel and think? This paper describes two crucial underlying processes, feeling with (empathy) and reasoning about (Theory of Mind) others. It reviews current conceptual models, the brain mechanisms involved and the factors that influence empathy and Theory of Mind.

Why is it important?
Humans are supersocial. Trying to understand how we manage to get along so well, cooperate with others to build megacities and space ships, for instance, requires a description of the processes that allow us to represent what is going on in others. This review gives a comprehensive overview of two crucial components to this representation: empathy and Theory of Mind.
