Why is it important?

Use of mass-produced sterile insects provides an effective, environmentally sound means of achieving insect suppression or eradication. It can reduce the use of pesticides harmful to the environment. Sterile insects also can be used to prevent establishment of invasive insect pests in areas susceptible to repeated introductions particularly urban settings.

The authors of the article cumulatively possessed more than 100 years of actual experience in the design, construction, and management of insect rearing, shipping, emergence and/or release of sterile insects successfully used to achieve pest control or eradication.
