What is it about?
EEG offers insights into psychological processes and states of consciousness by describing brain activity and connectivity. Here, we propose a common classification system for different types of meditation/mindfulness, and examine how such findings suggest brain mechanisms that explain the diverse range of experiences and conscious states that can arise.

Why is it important?
Meditation can be a doorway to transcendental or mystical experiences that can act as powerful catalysts of psychological and spiritual experiences. EEG findings offer clues to what is happening in the brain when meditators encounter experiences (such as 'zen', 'nirvana', and 'sunyata') and how it is that they can have such a transformative effect.
