What is it about?
This research provides insights from allied health professionals on the front line of a large public hospital setting and transitioning from a matrix structure that dispersed them into each clinical unit into a centralised allied health division positively impacted their ability to do their jobs effectively across all areas. The research highlights the importance of ensuring allied health are structured in a way that maximises their performance and most importantly maintains their professional identities, gives them a voice at the strategic level and fosters a health culture and ultimately their individual and group wellbeing.

Why is it important?
Allied health professionals are imperative to the sustainability of healthcare, particularly in our complex public hospitals that are constantly looking for ways to be more efficient and effective to meet the growing demand. If administrators do not structure allied health in a way that maximises their ability to strive and contribute fully, then this precious resource will not perform effectively and will not be able to assist healthcare to solve the wicked problems they arefacing into the future.
Perspectives
This publication was driven by the Executive lead of allied health within the large public sector organisation in which they work. This was part of PhD studies over a 6 year period, in which the evidence from the research undertaken was so compelling that the organisation under study supported the structural change of the allied health staff in the acute and subacute sector working within a matrix structure to change to a centralised allied health structure. The authors hope that this research will support allied health professionals with evidence if they are experiencing similar structural issues or concerns within their organisation.
