What is it about?

This work aims to develop a process for the treatment and recovery of OMW using an extractor (separator) based on cryoconcentration. The main objective is to design, develop, and implement an innovative prototype to produce two types of solutions: i) solutions rich in valuable phenolic compounds, and ii) high-quality water suitable for agricultural reuse.

Why is it important?

It aims to develop a process based on cooling, freezing, sweating, and melting for obtaining solutions rich in polyphenolic compounds from OMW for animal skins tanning, with a view to producing environmentally friendly leathers. Leathers tanned with chromium salts, metals, aldehydes, or synthetic tannins generate highly hazardous waste that is difficult to dispose of, because its composition contains toxic substances or requires treatment before it is released into the environment. The overall results demonstrate that the cryoconcentration process can be successfully applied to produce tanning solutions from OMW, which can transform the hide into leather.

Perspectives

The technique will enable a sustainable and innovative circular approach to the management of industrial liquid effluents, thereby reducing the impact of wastewater on the environment. The present study has demonstrated the simplicity and potential of the block freeze cryoconcentration technique. The results could be improved if sweating were coupled with refrigerated or vacuum centrifugation, to develop a sweating methodology that could be extrapolated industrially.
