What is it about?
Traditional bibliometrics like the h-index or basic citation counts have several limitations. A new measure by Professor Ann-Wil Harzing known as the hIa (an individual annual h-index) offers some significant improvements. This paper expands on the work of Harzing by examining the hIa in a different context. The findings confirm many of Harzing's claims for the new hIa metric. Including it's ability to offer some control for career length and academic discipline when comparing academic research output.

Why is it important?
Despite knowledge of the weaknesses of traditional metrics such as the h-index, these measures are still used too frequently for important comparisons and decision making. Every effort should be made to improve such metrics to insure we reduce the bias in research evaluation and improve decision making. The hIa offers some promise with this.
