In the manufacture of titanium-alloy compressor disks and impellers for gas-turbine aircraft engines, it is impossible to produce thin-walled workpieces of complex shape by casting. Therefore, workpieces of simple form are produced, which entails the removal of large margins by machining. That increases the number of manufacturing operations. Each operation introduces stress in the surface layer of the machine part and redistributes the stress created in preceding operations.
