What is it about?

Tourism is often considered a peacetime activity only but history is replete with tourism during wartime, both by military personnel as well as civilians, as in the case of occupied France during the Second World War. This work explores the many links.

Why is it important?

This work shows how war and tourism, two sets of activities that occur frequently in human history, are often linked.

Perspectives

I started this project upon discovering the Deutsche Wegleiter (German Guide), a bi-weekly magazine published for German soldiers stationed in occupied France during the Second World War. This led eventually to the publication of my book War Tourism: Second World War France from Defeat and Occupation to the Creation of Heritage by Cornell University Press in 2018. The present project expands on this theme to explore the relationships between the two throughout human history.
