What is it about?

Naphthalic dicarboxylate can have different projections to act as mono dentate or bi dentate, or bridging ligands. Thus a fine tuning on the orientation can change the binding modes to metal ions. Due to its ability to bridge metal ions in forming cyclic complexes the nuclearity of the cyclic complexes can be varied by slight variation on coordination mode. Accordingly metallcycles of various nuclearlity can be prepared. In this study it is shown that the pi-decorating ligands can be a controlling factor to form tetra or hexa nuclear metallacycles. It is also shown that nuclearity is also influenced by the metal ion under consideration.

Why is it important?

This clearly suggests the role of pi-decorating ligands and metal ions in deciding the nuclearities of metallacycles. Since some these complexes have nano-dimension and also how property of single molecular magnet; this study points to the fact that molecular and structural understanding should have highest priority in material design.
