Why is it important?

The successful daily extreme precipitation prediction skill achieved by this study is recognized as the model that "could open the door for improved flood prediction" by the American Geophysical Union. This study is rewarded as the featured contribution to the top journal, Water Resources Research, in the Year 2013. Only 5% of the published items with significant advances are categorized by the editors as featured contribution every year. This study was the first one that focused on large-scale precipitation predictability by analyzing global and regional atmospheric circulation, and built the foundation in the field for improving the predictability of extreme rainfall and large-scale flood events using global atmospheric moisture pathways.
