What is it about?
To our knowledge this is the first in vivo study investigating the influence of gestational diabetes (GDM) on the fetal autonomic (ANS) in human pregnancy. Our data showed that there were significant differences using our innovative phase-rectified-signal averaging (PRSA) method between controls and GDM fetuses and that these differences between groups could not be demonstrated using conventional c-CTG analysis. Altogether, analysis of human fetal cardiovascular and ANS function by PRSA may offer improved diagnosis over conventional techniques to identify effects on fetal physiology of complicated pregnancy, such as GDM. Data in the current study provide evidence that there is indeed a link between GDM and activation of fetal ANS.
