Measured acoustic intensities for clinical diagnostic ultrasound transducers and correlation with thermal index

What is it about?

Ultrasound safety is important when scanning a pregnant woman. To aid the examiner in this, the thermal index for bone is displayed on-screen during ultrasound examinations. Here we show that the thermal index for bone is a poor predictor of actual measured ultrasound intensity.
