What is it about?
This work discusses the use of network coding techniques in satellite scenarios, aiming at reliably deliver machine-to-machine traffic from/to multiple sources to/from a remote host. An urban scenario is considered, where the satellite signal may be impaired by multiple obstacles (buildings, etc), thus terrestrial cooperation is used among the mobile nodes on the ground to increase the probability of a correct data reception.

Why is it important?
This work demonstrates how network coding can be efficiently used in urban scenarios to increase the satellite coverage, by exploiting short range communications (such as vehicular) on the ground to enable cooperation among mobile nodes. According to the users' density, an analytical framework is provided to estimate the coding ratio to be applied and the expected coverage.
