What is it about?
The hidden (or latent) Markov models are widely employed in many disciplines, in this work we show the performance when an ordinal response variable based on a rating scale is of interest. We compare the results with that obtained by employing alternative models known in the literature as growth mixture models.

Why is it important?
We report the model developments, and we show how the latent Markov model can handle the ordinality of the responses with covariates. We show in which way it is more efficient and suitable compared to the latent growth mixture models.
