What is it about?

Since 2008 it is known that some drugs acting on the renin‐angiotensin‐aldosterone system should not be combined or used, since they did not have the assumed benefical effects and were even harmful. These findings were published in scientific journals and dear doctor letters to make prescribers aware. It is unknown how well this recommendation which are improtant for patients receiving this drugs are followed by doctors caring for them. One would hope that all doctors are aware of the risks involved for affected patients and stop prescribing harmfull drugs or drug combinations. Our finding confirm that this is not always the case and even new patients are started on potentially harmful drugs or drug combinations.

Why is it important?

Once it is established that a drug or a drug combination is potentially harmful doctors prescribing the drugs and affected patients should be informed by their doctor and switched to safer alternatives.

Perspectives

Better ways to inform doctors and affected patients about potentially harmful drugs or drug combinations are needed.
