What is it about?
In this article, we address the state of the art in using the aerogel as the reinforcement for polymer nanocomposites with a particular emphasis on identifying fundamental structure–property relationships and compare the properties and performance of polymer-aerogel nanocomposite with other polymer nanocomposites. Moreover, we attempt to present a brief description on preparation of the aerogel and its characteristics.

Why is it important?
Aerogels are intriguing porous solid-state materials with unique properties such as extremely low density, large open pores, and high surface area. The aerogel composed of a three-dimensional (3D) solid network with a large number of air-filled pores in the form of highly cross-linked structures. Therefore, the aerogel is comparable to the mesostructured fillers and can be considered as the reinforcing agent for polymer nanocomposites. The aerogels may smooth the path to stimulate the effective fabrication of the multifunctional nanocomposite materials. In general, the aerogel can be prepared and optimized firstly, afterwards the polymer matrix could possibly be backfilled into its network.
