Why is it important?
Telomere shortening is a natural aging process that can be accelerated by oxidative stress and inflammation, or attenuated by factors associated with good health. Different life conditions have a negative effect on telomere length, which is modulated by oxidative stress, inflammation and lifestyle variables. Obesity increases the risk of many physical and mental conditions. With our review we noted a trend toward a negative association between telomere length and obesity, particularly in abdominal body region, but did not find longitidinais studies that could establish a causal relationship.
