What is it about?
Extreme storms registered by the urban rain gauge network installed in the metropolitan area of Barcelona were investigated and classified in four main classes, related to their temporal structure. An index measuring the severity of these storms and taking into account the contribution of the different meteorological scales implied in the rainfall generation process was calculated.

Why is it important?
Relationship between the maximum rainfall amounts registered in time intervals of different durations for the same rainfall event is very important in certain applications, as the planning of the sewer network of a city or the design of civil engineering works, as well as providing information about the fine structure and the spatial and temporal organization of the rainfall, and, therefore, its origin.
