What is it about?

The suprisingly large climate warming detected on late spring in the Western Mediterranean region can only be understood if changes in the general atmospheric circulation are invoked. This changes mainly consist of an increasing of the subtropical presence in that season, that at its time can be related to the expansion of the Hadley cells.

Why is it important?

Tha antropogenic climate change is not a simple and uniform planetary warming: the warming forces changes in the general atmspheric circulation that can explain regional and seasonal strong heterogeneities of the planetary warming. The particularly large warming on late spring in the Mediterrnean region is an example of that.

Perspectives

Analysing changes in the atmospheric circulation, through using medium level magnituds, like the 500 hPa geopotential (that gives information about the location, shape and frequency of tje subtropical anticyclones, for example) can constitute a good tool for unsderstanting regional ans seasonal heterogeneities in the climate warming
