What is it about?
Brominated pollutants are persistent and carcinogenic. This study has shown that a selection of brominated aliphatic pollutants can be abiotically degraded by electrochemical reduction, using a biochar mediator/catalyst and a green rust (Iron II) reductant. The study includes reactivity tests in groundwater samples, and reactivity tests with a modified biochar.

Why is it important?
This is a novel remediation method that is efficient, and environmentally safe compared to current bioremediation methods or electrochemical methods involving zero valent iron. Furthermore, it is based on available substrates and affordable materials, why it can be readily implemented anywhere necessary.
