What is it about?

A general description of the metabolic syndrome and models used to its study; and particularly a rat model generated by sugar-rich beverage and normal chow in our laboratory. In addition, we describe some molecular changes observed in this model- insulin-secreting cells (pancreatic beta cells) at an early phase that could explain hyperinsulinemia in metabolic syndrome.

Why is it important?

This review describes early molecular changes in beta cells in an early phase of metabolic syndrome in a rat model and proposes how these changes could be related with insulin hypersecretion. The study brings out a more comprehensive view of the beta-cell pathophysiology progression fro metabolic syndrome to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
