What is it about?

Patients with breast cancer have higher rates of thyroid autoimmunity, and viceversa. We have been investigating why this may happen, and in this paper we discovered that thyroid peroxidase, a protein present in large quantities within the thyroid gland, is also present in breast cancer.

Why is it important?

Thyroid peroxidase is a well known protein present in the thyroid gland; since we have just discovered that it is also expressed in breast cancer, it could be used to develop specific and targeted therapies for such disease.

Perspectives

Further studies are needed to better characterise the expression of thyroid peroxidase in breast cancer tissue, and investigate the possibility of targeted therapy for breast cancer based on this protein.
