What is it about?

Metaverse has emerged as a groundbreaking concept, promising to revolutionize our interaction with the digital world in recent years. This paper reports a recent bibliometric study of the metaverse that provides insightful data on its research trends, themes, and future directions, offering a panoramic view of this rapidly evolving field.

Why is it important?

We identified a striking growth in metaverse-related research using Scopus - one of the largest academic indexing databases. Of the 1031 journal articles, reviews, and conference papers found, about 80% were published in 2022 alone. This surge indicates an increasing global interest and investment in understanding and developing metaverse technologies.

Perspectives

Writing this article was fun as my co-authors - Dr. Billy Yu, Mr. Andy Chung, and Dr. David Chung shared our own thoughts about the metaverse, its history, and its trajectory. Given the dynamic nature of the metaverse, we identify several potential directions for future research. These include deeper explorations into the integration of advanced technologies like AI and blockchain in the metaverse, further development of immersive and interactive experiences, and the exploration of practical applications in various sectors including education, entertainment, and business. What's more, it reminds me that I had explored iTouch i.e. a remote touching device (but not in the form of glove) around 30 years ago in Hong Kong.
