What is it about?
Recent field studies show that plants use water of a character different to mobile water found in soils, groundwater and streams. This phenomenon has been described as the 'two water worlds' (TWW) hypothesis. Nevertheless, there are still many open questions surrounding the TWW hypothesis. This paper addresses multiple working hypotheses and proposes a way forward within the framework of the TWW hypothesis.

Why is it important?
There is a need to identify the many open research questions surrounding the TWW hypothesis. Doing so would pave the way for alternative, multiple working hypotheses that might be testable in future experiments.
