What is it about?
We have described a conceptually new synthesis of 2,2'-spirobiindole derivatives via a Cu-mediated cascade reaction of cyclopenta[b]indoles in the presence of air. This operationally simple, straightforward and inexpensive yet innovative method involved the rearrangement of several bonds including a facial selective intramolecular ring closure in which Cu played a key role.

Why is it important?
This research has furnished an array of 2,2'-spirobi[indolin]-3-one based novel and complex molecules useful for academic and industrial R&Ds. One of these 2,2'-spirobiindole derivatives was converted a paullone like compound in a single step highlighting the potential of this Cu-mediated methodology. Being not known in the literature the present research results could be a new and useful addition to the indole chemistry.
