What is it about?
The phase composition was studied and a diagram of phase equilibria was constructed in the Al2O3-V2O5-Nb2O5 system up to 1100 °C in the subsolidus region. No new ternary compounds were found in the system. A new metastable crystalline modification of AlNbO4 has been discovered, which belongs to the monoclinic system with unit cell parameters a = 4.727, b = 10.612, c = 19.906 Ǻ, β = 92.16°. After storing samples of this phase under normal temperature and pressure for 9 months, it passes into a stable modification of AlNbO4.

Why is it important?
One of the primary tasks of chemistry is the development and creation of new materials. Simple and complex oxides have found very wide use in many branches of industry. Synthesis of new materials based on complex oxides and the improvement of existing technologies for the production of these materials are based both on the study of the phase diagrams of oxide systems and on fundamental investigations into the 'composition-structure-properties' relationships.
