What is it about?

Uterine carcinosarcoma (UCS) is an aggressive, lethal type of uterine cancer that disproportionately affects black women. We found that high tumor expression of insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) approximately doubles the risk of recurrence and death from UCS. We also found that black women had higher tumor IGF2 expression compared to white women, and that high IGF2 contributed to their lower chance of survival.

Why is it important?

Reducing mortality from uterine cancer requires a better understanding of lethal uterine cancer, including UCS. We identified IGF2 as an independent prognostic biomarker for recurrence and death in UCS. Assessment of tumor IGF2 expression may help to identify patients who could benefit from novel therapies.

Perspectives

We hope to further understand the detailed mechanisms by which IGF2 is up-regulated in UCS tumor tissue and contributes to disease recurrence and mortality.
