What is it about?
This study develops a new classification of the anatomical variations of the prostatic arteries. The classification is based on a cadaveric and radiologic study plus the meta-analysis of the previous published data. More than 700 prostatic arteries have been considered.

Why is it important?
Almost 80% of the prostatic arteries origin from the axis composed by the anterior division of the internal iliac artery, the gluteal-pudendal trunk, and the internal pudendal artery. Knowledge of vascular patterns of the prostatic arteries is extremely relevant when planning prostatectomies or prostatic arterial embolizations to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. This study presents, to our knowledge, the widest sample analysis of the prostatic arteries.
Perspectives
This report provides a clinical scope on the anatomical variations of the prostatic arteries, since it has been developed both from cadaveric and radiologic sources, and includes the most extensive analysis on the previously published data. It is a comprehensive study that allows the clinicians to review the vascular variations implicated in minimally invasive and surgical approaches in bening prostatic hyperplasia.
