What is it about?
I discuss the circumstances under which the analysis of summary data can be as efficient as the analysis of original data. I also make some comments regarding random main effects of trial.

Why is it important?
I show that the bivariate random effect approach of van Houwelingen et al does not respect strict concurrent control. I speculate that in practice very little bias may be expected to result.
