What is it about?

This article describes an integrative three‐step framework to rank priority areas for conservation at a fine scale, using distribution modelling for freshwater crustaceans and the current protected area network, which was applied to four freshwater ecoregions in South America.

Why is it important?

The establishment of protected areas has also become an important mechanism for biodiversity conservation. A protected area is an area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity.

Perspectives

Fishes and benthic macroinvertebrates usually with high levels of endemism could also benefit from this approach. Investing effort for preserving these highly species‐rich and endemic regions is crucial for decreasing the decline in freshwater biodiversity.
