What is it about?

This article examines the role of Australian aid in introducing inclusive education initiatives in the Pacific island nation, Kiribati. Through analysis of documents such as the Australian policy document 'Development for all" and through interview data from key stakeholders the article poses the question of dependency on Australian aid as a barrier to local ownership and long term sustainability of these initiatives.

Why is it important?

Aid policy is a controversial issue in imposing the donor country's agenda on to the recipient country. Australian aid is a dominant force in the Pacific region. Australia's aid program has questioned in terms of effectiveness and its relevance to the domestic needs of the Australian population.

Perspectives

The research was generated from my observations of Australian aid programs in Kiribati during a 12 month volunteer assignment in 2013.
