What is it about?

This work was to study the effect of hybridized silica and cellulose fiber on natural rubber. The partial replacement of cellulose fiber at small amount (5 phr) could appreciably improved processing properties of silica/natural rubber composite, and the combined use of silane in hybridized filler-natural rubber composites also further increase processing ability and mechanical properties.

Why is it important?

Our work showed that the addition of cellulose fiber into silica-filled natural rubber could increase the processability of silica- filled natural rubbers and the modification of cellulose fiber and silica with silane further increase the processing properties as well as rubber reinforcement.

Perspectives

Processing of highly filled natural rubber is one of major problem in rubber industries. Silica is a conventional filler used for natural rubber reinforcement in rubber tire industry. This article showed new concept to tackle with the problem of silica-filled rubber processing by simple way. I find this article was nice to read because the replacement of silica with small amount of natural cellulose fiber in the presence of silane was key benefit to processing property and natural rubber reinforcement.
