Electrically Conductive Polymers and Composites for Biomedical Applications

Perspectives

This chapter summarizes the historical developments and details of electrically conductive polymers, their composites, and the related biomedical applications. An overview of the peculiarity of the electrically conducting polymers compared to their composites is also discussed. The synthesis methods, spectroscopic as well as electrochemical characterization techniques, scope, applicability, and rationale behind the choice of electrically conducting polymers and their composites are also elaborated on. By careful selection of synthetic techniques, understanding the unique chemistry of novel functional polymer‐ and polymer‐based composites having distinct combinations of material properties, unique electrically conductive polymers, and their composites can be designed and fabricated for novel biomedical applications. Future possibilities for the development of novel composites for biomedical applications are also introduced.
