Why is it important?
While both male and female genital tracts are considered be effector sites of the mucosal immune system, they have distinct characteristics relating to their unique physiological roles in reproduction that set them apart from other, better known components of the mucosal immune system. Comprehension of these features is necessary for the development of improved treatments for STIs, and of effective vaccines against them.
