Why is it important?
The contribution of American philosopher John Rawls's Theory of Justice to the ethics of social and economic distribution is reviewed briefly. Parallels with insurance are drawn. Its relevance to decision-making for groups of individuals is considered and an application to clinical trials is briefly considered. Some problems with the theory are touched on.
