What is it about?

The study proposes a procedure that uses application-and function-based strategies to retrieve patent documents and analyses these documents by their International Patent Classification. The aim is to identify trends in the industry in which the materials and process are inserted and to map industrial sectors where they perform the same function.

Why is it important?

The function-based patent retrieval strategy seems to be adequate to identify innovative and disruptive solutions, whereas the application-based strategy seems to be appropriate to identify the technological trends adopted by a specific industry or product under analysis.

Perspectives

The procedure developed for using patent information to support materials selection expands the possibilities for disruptive innovations.
