What is it about?
Climate change is not just about air temperatures. It is also about extreme weather events. In the case of rainfall, climate change has led to us enduring extreme weather events more often. They are more intense, and they go on for longer. But extreme weather events are very different, depending on where you are. Scientists need ways to classify the climate in different parts of the world, in order to better understand how extreme weather events have evolved. Traditional ways of dividing up the world into regions are not that useful, because they are not based on climate. That makes it harder to make predictions or draw conclusions at a regional level. In this project, scientists came up with a new way of classifying regions based on climate and weather information. They came up with 20 categories that cover both their overall climate type, and the effects of climate change.
