What is it about?
This article explores what social media promotion can bring to medical literature and discusses how new performance metrics are being developed to measure this effect. In the field of inherited metabolic disease, where many clinicians do not engage with social media, these metrics align poorly with traditional measures such as article citations. Despite these limitations, altmetrics can hi-light breakout papers that appeal to a wider audience and journals would do well to recognise that.

Why is it important?
Social Media engagement can provide cheap, rapid promotion of a journal supporting the dissemination of new information alongside peer review and policy change. However, a critical mass of engagement is required to make this effective.
